Piddubne in Donetsk and Sobolivka in Kharkiv Now Under Russian Control, Says Moscow
International Desk: Russia announced on Sunday that it has captured two more Ukrainian settlements, Piddubne in the Donetsk region and Sobolivka in the Kharkiv region. These claims, made through separate posts on Telegram by the Russian Defence Ministry, come as part of Moscow’s continuing offensive in the region that has seen its forces gain ground steadily for over a year.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, army units "liberated" the villages of Poddubnoye and Sobolevka, using the Russian versions of the names, as part of their latest push. This marks the third consecutive month of accelerated territorial advances for Russian troops, exploiting what military analysts describe as Ukraine’s stretched manpower and resource limitations.
Ukraine has not yet issued a statement responding to Russia’s latest territorial claims. However, independent battlefield tracking, such as the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), confirms that Sobolivka lies just west of Kupiansk, an area previously outside of Russia’s control zones on military maps.
The village of Piddubne, which once had a population of approximately 500 before the war, is situated only 7 kilometers from Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, highlighting how deep Russian forces have pushed toward central Ukraine. The capture of Sobolivka, located just 3 kilometres west of Kupiansk, suggests intensified pressure on Ukrainian positions defending key eastern transport corridors.
Russia’s announcement follows months of escalated military action and mounting pressure along the front lines, especially in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. Analysts have observed a shift in momentum in favour of Russian forces amid Western aid delays, manpower shortages, and stalled counter-offensives by Ukraine.
The situation remains fluid, and further confirmations are awaited from independent and Ukrainian sources.
