Relatives and Dalit leaders demand dismissal of Kudremukh police personnel, seek ₹50 lakh compensation
Chikkamagaluru: Tension gripped Sanse village in Kalasa taluk after Nagesh, a Dalit youth from Bastigadde, died by suicide on July 15, leaving behind a note accusing Kudremukh police personnel of assault and caste-based abuse.
According to police reports, Nagesh was travelling in an autorickshaw around 10:30 pm when Constable Siddesh from Kudremukh police station, along with two locals, blocked his path. In his complaint before his death, Nagesh stated that when he approached them with his mobile torch, the group accused him of filming them drinking alcohol, used caste slurs against him, and assaulted him. He was treated at Chikkamagaluru District Hospital for a week.
Case Against Victim Deepened Distress
Following his complaint, Kudremukh police registered a counter-case against Nagesh for allegedly obstructing police duty, also seizing his autorickshaw and a pesticide spraying machine used for areca nut farming.
Though he was granted bail, relatives say he faced severe financial stress, with no means to recover his seized vehicle, repay loans, or secure employment. In his suicide note, Nagesh accused Constable Siddesha and the Kudremukh Sub-Inspector of harassment, urging authorities to take strict action.
Protests and Demands for Justice
His body was brought to the Kalasa Community Health Centre, where relatives and locals staged a protest. Dalit leader Angadi Chandru demanded the dismissal of both the accused constable and sub-inspector, along with ₹50 lakh compensation for Nagesh’s family.
