Missing Youth Hemanth Acharya Found Dead in Netravati River After Four-Day Search in Bantwal

Body of 21-year-old recovered near Bajal Mugeru; search operations involved police, NDRF, drone teams, and local volunteers

Bantwal: In a tragic end to a four-day-long search operation, the body of Hemanth Acharya (21), a resident of Kadeshivalaya in Bantwal taluk, has been recovered from the Netravati River. His body was found floating in the river near Bajal Mugeru, under the jurisdiction of the Kankanady police station, late on July 31.

Hemanth has been missing since July 27

Hemanth had reportedly gone missing from his residence on July 27. A missing person’s complaint was lodged at the Bantwal Rural Police Station on Monday, July 28. The following day, July 29, his two-wheeler and mobile phone were discovered abandoned near the Jakribettu dam, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bantwal Town Police Station.

Multi-agency search launched

Immediately after the discovery, a massive search operation was initiated involving local divers, personnel from the fire and emergency services, and officers from both the Bantwal rural and town police stations. Despite their efforts throughout the evening of July 29, no clues were found.

Search expanded between Jakribettu and Thumbay dams

The operation resumed early on July 30, focusing on the river stretch between Jakribettu and Thumbay dams. Despite combing the waters for hours, the teams remained unsuccessful.

Drone-assisted search leads to recovery

On July 31, the search effort was significantly intensified under the coordination of Sampath Suvarna, a member of Kadeshivalaya Gram Panchayat. Reinforcements included teams led by Eshwar Malpe, personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local expert swimmer Nisar.

Later in the day, three separate drone-assisted search teams scouted the downstream areas from the Thumbay dam. By evening, one of the drone units spotted a body floating in the middle of the Netravati River. The search team quickly moved in and successfully retrieved the body, which was confirmed to be that of Hemanth Acharya.

“It was a joint effort involving the community and emergency services. Drone technology helped us locate the body when all other methods failed,” said a rescue team member involved in the operation.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of death.
