Nagamma, who remained unaware of her beloved nephew Puneeth Rajkumar’s death, dies due to age-related ailments in her ancestral home
Chamarajanagar: Nagamma (92), the elder sister of Kannada cinema icon Dr. Rajkumar, passed away at her residence in Gajanur on Thursday, August 1. Suffering from age-related health issues, she was under continuous nursing care at the family's ancestral home.
Her passing marks the end of the senior generation of the Rajkumar family, a lineage revered across Karnataka and the Kannada film industry.
Nagamma was the last link to Dr. Rajkumar's generation
Nagamma held a special place in the hearts of fans and family alike, as the last surviving elder from the generation of Dr. Rajkumar, the matinee idol who remains a legendary figure in Kannada cinema. Despite her declining health, Nagamma remained mentally connected to her family, especially her nephew Puneeth Rajkumar, fondly known as ‘Appu’.
"My mother-in-law Nagamma would often ask, ‘Come take care of me’," a family member shared, reflecting her deep emotional connection with the family.
Unaware of Puneeth Rajkumar’s passing
In a heart-wrenching reality, Nagamma was never informed about the untimely demise of Puneeth Rajkumar, who passed away from a heart attack on October 29, 2021, at the age of 46. Her family decided to shield her from the tragic news due to her fragile health.
Even as recently as March 17—Puneeth’s 50th birth anniversary- Nagamma had expressed her heartfelt wish to see him. In a video that went viral on social media, she can be seen saying:
“Kanda, I want to meet you.”
The video touched the hearts of thousands of fans, who were moved by her innocent yearning for a nephew she would never meet again.
Legacy and cultural significance
Nagamma’s passing has left a deep void in the Rajkumar family and among legions of fans across the state. Known for her grace and familial warmth, she symbolized the values of humility and tradition that the Rajkumar family has stood for over decades.
The final rites are expected to be held in Gajanur, where she spent her final years.
