PM Modi Hails 7.8% GDP Growth, Says India on Path to Become Semiconductor Powerhouse

At Semicon India 2025, the Prime Minister highlights record growth despite global challenges, Rs 1.5 lakh crore investment in 10 semiconductor projects

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asserted that India’s GDP has grown by 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025, despite global uncertainties and what he termed as “economic selfishness” caused by sweeping tariffs imposed by the US on India.

India’s Strong Economic Growth
Speaking at the Semicon India 2025 inaugural event, Modi said,

“Once again, India has performed better than every expectation. Amidst global concerns and confusion, India has achieved 7.8 percent growth.”

He credited India’s resilience in navigating international trade pressures while maintaining growth momentum.

Chips are the ‘Digital Diamonds’
The Prime Minister emphasised the central role of semiconductors in shaping the future:

“In the semiconductor world, fuel is called black gold, chips are digital diamonds. The last century was shaped by oil, but today, power is limited to a small chip.”

Semicon India Projects
Launched in 2021, the Semicon India program has rapidly expanded.

  • 2023: First semiconductor unit approved

  • 2024: One additional plant sanctioned

  • 2025: Five more projects approved

With a total of 10 projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore, Modi said this reflects the global trust in India.

Ease of Doing Business
Highlighting reforms, Modi noted that India has rolled out a national single window system to streamline approvals across the Centre and states. “Our investors are now free from paperwork to a large extent,” he said.

India as a Semiconductor Nation
Declaring that India is “on the path to becoming a full-fledged semiconductor nation,” Modi said,

“The days are not far when India’s smallest chip will bring the biggest change in the world. Designed in India, Made in India, Trusted by the world.”

He also extended an open invitation to global investors to participate in India’s semiconductor journey.
