New Bihar Government to Take Shape Amid Speculation on Chief Ministership; PM Modi Likely to Attend Ceremony
Patna: The NDA government in Bihar is set to be sworn in on November 20 at the historic Gandhi Maidan, following a landslide victory in the assembly elections. However, uncertainty persists over whether Nitish Kumar will take oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time, sources in the JD(U) confirmed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the grand ceremony. During the campaign, the Prime Minister had addressed over a dozen rallies and had publicly stated that he would “come to take the oath of the new NDA government,” signaling his strong involvement in the alliance’s Bihar strategy.
Nitish Kumar to Chair Final Cabinet Meeting
Nitish Kumar, backed by all NDA allies, is scheduled to chair his final cabinet meeting at 11:30 am today, during which a resolution to dissolve the cabinet is set to be passed. He is then expected to tender his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, paving the way for the formation of a new government.
JD(U) Moves Resolution Authorising Nitish Kumar
A senior JD(U) leader confirmed that a resolution will be passed to authorize Nitish Kumar to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan.
“The proposal to dissolve the cabinet and authorise Nitish Kumar has been agreed upon by party leaders,” a senior JD(U) functionary told Sources.
The development follows the visit of Chief Electoral Officer Vinod Singh Gunjial, who submitted the list of newly elected NDA members to the Governor. The NDA secured 202 seats, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 89 seats.
Opposition Struggles to Cross 35-Mark
The Grand Alliance—comprising JD(U), LJP, Hindustani Awami Morcha, Rashtriya Lok Morcha, Congress, RJD and three Left parties—managed to win only nine additional seats, failing to cross the 35-seat mark, indicating a severe setback for the opposition.
JD(U) Seeks Higher Cabinet Representation
JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha, who met BJP leaders in Delhi regarding cabinet formation, held discussions with Nitish Kumar on Sunday. He stated that a “new government will be formed in a few days” and reiterated that the NDA would fulfil all promises mentioned in its manifesto.
A JD(U) leader revealed that the party is expecting greater cabinet representation than the previous government, which included only 12 JD(U) ministers.
LJP Eyes Ministerial Berths
Meanwhile, Chirag Paswan confirmed that the LJP is keen to join the new NDA government, though he avoided answering whether his party is aiming for the Deputy Chief Minister’s post. In the outgoing cabinet, BJP’s Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha served as Deputy Chief Ministers.
