Refuses to Respond to Opposition Queries, BJP and JD(S) Members Walk Out
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah abruptly halted his response to the Governor's speech, triggering a walkout by BJP and JD(S) members after he declined to address their queries In a dramatic turn of events during the Council session on Wednesday.
Siddaramaiah launched scathing criticism against the central government, particularly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over tax devolution and drought relief funds.
During his lengthy two-and-a-half-hour speech, tensions escalated when Siddaramaiah invoked Modi's name, drawing ire from BJP members who objected to what they termed as an "election speech." Leader of the Opposition Kota Srinivas Poojary criticized Siddaramaiah's remarks, stating that no chief minister had previously accused the prime minister on the House floor, branding it as more than just a political address.
Chairman Basavaraj Horatti expressed dismay at the Opposition's disruptive conduct, labeling it as "irresponsible behavior" unprecedented in his 44 years of Council experience. Undeterred, Siddaramaiah urged BJP leaders to lead a delegation to Delhi to advocate for the state's fair share of taxes and funds, drawing parallels to Modi's past demands for Gujarat.
Despite BJP members' objections citing past incidents, Siddaramaiah remained resolute, asserting the Congress's confidence in securing 20 Lok Sabha seats from Karnataka. Referencing recent electoral victories, he emphasized a pragmatic approach, stating, "We will not exaggerate like the BJP; we are certain of clinching 20 seats.”
