Just before the impending general elections, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), led by Amit Shah, issued the Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024, paving the way for the enforcement of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) sanctioned by the Parliament in 2019.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condemned the BJP's utilization of the CAA for electoral gains, emphasizing its contradiction to India's principles of diversity and secularism.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also asserted that the CAA would not be enforced in Kerala. This decision was preceded by criticism from both the Left and the Congress in Kerala, who accused the BJP of strategically timing the notification of CAA rules to favor its electoral agenda.
