More than two dozen students detained amid demonstrations against UGC-NET cancellation and NEET irregularities

New Delhi: More than two dozen students from various universities and student groups were detained on Thursday during protests in central Delhi. They were demonstrating against the cancellation of the UGC-NET examination and alleged irregularities in the NEET.

The students, including members from SFI, AISA, DSF, KYS, and NSUI, gathered outside the Ministry of Education and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's residence. They called for a ban on the National Testing Agency (NTA) and an investigation into a purported paper leak.

The Union Education Ministry had announced the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam citing concerns over its integrity. This decision came after widespread discrepancies were reported in the NEET-UG results declared on June 4. Students have been urging for a re-examination, criticizing the NTA for its handling of exams.

During the protests, allegations arose that police had manhandled and assaulted protesting students, particularly targeting female demonstrators, according to statements from SFI and DSF. However, police officials denied these claims, citing lack of proper permissions for the protest in a high-security zone under section 144.

The students also demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over accusations of corruption in the examination process. Earlier in the day, members of NSUI were also detained while protesting outside Pradhan's residence, where NSUI national president Varun Choudhary threw a bag of counterfeit currency into the air to symbolize their demand for an urgent investigation into the matter.
