Mumbai: Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, has stepped into the political arena as a nominee for the Rajya Sabha elections under the banner of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This move comes shortly after her unsuccessful bid in the Lok Sabha elections, where she contested from the Baramati constituency, losing to her sister-in-law Supriya Sule, who secured her fourth consecutive victory.
According to
statements by senior NCP leader and state minister Chhagan Bhujbal, the
decision to nominate Sunetra Pawar for the Rajya Sabha was finalized during a
party meeting held on Wednesday evening. While expressing his personal interest
in contesting the elections, Bhujbal acknowledged the party's choice, stating,
"Everyone has to accept the party's decision. There are some compulsions.
I am not an independent person, but a party worker and leader."
The Rajya
Sabha secretariat has officially announced ten vacancies in the Upper House,
with Maharashtra being allocated two seats among them. This move by the NCP
underscores the party's strategic positioning and its ongoing political
maneuvers in the state.
