Bengaluru: Ajay Kamath,
Secretary of AIDSO, has criticized the Karnataka State Government's proposal to
introduce NRI quota in government medical colleges, denouncing it as a commercial
approach to education.
In a
statement on Monday, Ajay Kamath highlighted the government's request to the
NMC for permission to establish NRI quota in these institutions. Although the
government pledged not to affect existing seats, it sought a 15% increase in
overall seat allocation. Critics argue that such a move could pave the way for
extensive commercialization of government medical colleges, undermining their
core mission of providing public education.
This
proposal, asserted Ajay Kamath, directly contradicts the essence of public
education. Advocates mentions that any expansion in seat availability should
prioritize benefiting economically disadvantaged students within Karnataka,
rather than monetizing seats through an NRI quota.
AIDSO urges
the state government to retract this proposal and instead focus on expanding
seat capacity in government medical colleges to ensure accessibility for poor
and rural students, who are increasingly finding medical education financially
unattainable.
