AISEC Karnataka President Denounces Karnataka Government's NRI Quota Decision
Bengaluru: Allamaprabhu
Bettadur, President of All India Save Education Committee (AISEC) Karnataka,
has vehemently denounced the Karnataka state government's decision to introduce
NRI quota in government medical colleges.
In a
statement released to the press on Monday, Allamaprabhu Bettaduru expressed
deep concern over the government's appeal to the Centre for permission to
allocate 15% supernumerary MBBS seats in government medical colleges, which he
criticized as effectively auctioning seats to wealthy individuals under the
guise of an NRI quota.
Government institutions
are not private property of any political entity," Bettaduru emphasized, but
are built with the toil and struggle of millions of poor citizens. He argued
that allowing the sale of seats in government institutions undermines
democratic principles, the quality of medical education, and public health
standards.
Bettaduru
warned that the introduction of this "illegitimate and illegal NRI
quota" indicates the state government's intent to fully commercialize and
privatize government medical colleges and hospitals. He reminded the government
of its role as custodian of public assets, not their owner, and urged it to
prioritize improving government institutions by cutting wasteful expenditures
and taxing corporate entities.
The
statement also highlighted historical resistance by students and the teaching
community under AISEC against similar government initiatives. AISEC called upon
students, doctors, and the people of Karnataka to unite against what it views
as an undemocratic move by the state government. Additionally, it appealed to
the central government and the National Medical Commission (NMC) to reject the
Karnataka government's demand.
