State Records 192 Suspected Cases; Hospitals on Alert
Mumbai: A 53-year-old man from Wadala has died of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in a government hospital, marking the first fatality due to the neurological disorder in Mumbai. Maharashtra has reported 192 suspected cases of GBS so far.
The deceased, who worked as a ward boy in a government hospital, had recently visited Pune, where GBS cases have been rising. He was admitted on January 23 in critical condition and passed away after several days of treatment.
A 16-year-old girl from Palghar is undergoing treatment for GBS at Nair Hospital, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Hospitals and medical colleges in Mumbai have been prepared to handle GBS cases, with necessary medicines and equipment in place.
The first GBS case in Mumbai was reported on February 7 when a 64-year-old woman from Andheri (East) was diagnosed. The Pune region has recorded 197 suspected and confirmed cases, including seven suspected deaths.
BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani confirmed the developments, stating that health authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
