Renowned Halakki Folk Singer Was Known for Preserving Tribal Music
Karwar: Padma Shri awardee Sukri Bomma Gowda, a celebrated folk singer from the Halakki Vokkaliga community, passed away at her residence in Badageri, Ankola taluk, in the early hours of Thursday. She was 91 and had been suffering from age-related ailments.
Sukri Bomma Gowda, known as "Sukraji" of Uttara Kannada, had recently undergone treatment for respiratory issues in Udupi before returning home. She is survived by her two grandchildren and a daughter-in-law.
A respected folk artist, she had memorized around 5,000 Halakki songs and played a key role in preserving the community’s musical traditions. She was also active in social causes, including the fight against alcoholism.
Recognizing her contributions to folk music and social service, the Government of India honored her with the Janapadashree Award (1999), Nadoja Award (2006), and Padma Shri (2017). She also received the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and several other state and national honors.
