BMRCL deploys AI-powered CCTV cameras across Bengaluru Metro stations to monitor threats, track vehicles with ANPR technology, and ensure public safety as tensions rise between India and Pakistan
Bengaluru: In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Bengaluru is tightening its security grip. With public safety at the forefront, both Central and State governments have issued high-alert directives at public gathering spots, especially across Metro, a transit lifeline for more than eight lakh daily commuters.
In a bold and proactive move, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has launched an AI-based surveillance initiative to detect and deter any suspicious activity before it escalates. The first phase of the mission includes the installation of 600 cutting-edge AI-integrated CCTV cameras at six crucial metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and M.G. Road.
"This is not just technology, this is a digital shield for every Bengaluru metro commuter," a BMRCL official declared.
These smart surveillance systems are designed to monitor not only the interiors of the stations but also their surrounding premises, turning these locations into closely watched zones. The cameras are equipped to instantly identify threats, raising red flags for authorities to act without delay.
What sets this initiative apart is the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, enabling authorities to track vehicle movements near stations and identify suspicious number plates in real-time. The integration of this AI solution marks a transformative shift in how metro security is approached.
"This system is not just a preventive measure—it's a real-time response mechanism," a senior metro safety officer explained.
"We’re not waiting for something to happen. We’re making sure it doesn’t."
BMRCL’s vision extends beyond the initial rollout. The goal is to eventually extend this intelligent monitoring framework across all metro stations in the city. The urgency of this implementation reflects the growing concern that public transit systems are potential targets during geopolitical unrest.
The surveillance setup, already operational at select locations, is being closely monitored for performance. While the tech-driven solution brings hope, questions remain about its effectiveness in high-pressure scenarios.
“We have faith in the AI systems, but vigilance from ground-level personnel will remain equally critical,” said a cybersecurity analyst.
For now, passengers can breathe easier knowing that Namma Metro is turning into one of the most secure urban transport systems in the country, with technology acting as the ever-watchful guardian.
