Parents and students join hands to oppose school closure, demand urgent improvements
Bengaluru: The All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) on Tuesday led a symbolic protest in front of the Government Junior Tamil Primary School in Q-Block, Srirampur, Bengaluru. The demonstration, joined by parents, students, and local residents, was part of a statewide campaign against the closure of 6,200 government schools in Karnataka.
Speaking at the protest, Abhaya Diwakar, State Vice President of AIDSO, said:
"Government schools are the last hope for poor students. The decision to shut them down is an attack on their right to education. AIDSO is conducting a 50 lakh signature campaign and organising parents’ meetings across the state to oppose this regressive move."
Protest Highlights Poor Infrastructure, Urgent Need for Repairs
The protest also drew attention to the dire conditions of the school:
-
Only one functioning toilet for students and staff,
-
Leaking roofs during rain,
-
Lack of safe drinking water,
-
Garbage accumulation around the premises,
-
And unauthorised parking is blocking school access.
Parents expressed deep concern that, instead of improving the facilities, authorities are choosing to neglect and shut down government schools that serve marginalised communities.
Demand for Government Action
Kalyan Kumar, District Secretary and Nature Secretariat Member, joined others in submitting a petition to the Field Education Officer of Bengaluru North Zone-2, requesting an immediate inspection of the school and intervention to address basic infrastructure needs.
"This protest is not just about one school—it is a battle to save thousands of schools that cater to the underprivileged," said Kumar.
A Community United for Education
With rising fears over closures and deteriorating school conditions, the Srirampur protest stands as a clear message to the government:
“We will not let our government school be closed.”
AIDSO has vowed to intensify its campaign in the coming weeks.
