Man may have been linked to terror outfit; explosion occurred while handling planted explosives, says police
Amritsar: A suspected terrorist was killed in a powerful explosion on Tuesday near Majitha Road in Amritsar, triggering panic in the area. Police suspect that the man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was affiliated with a terrorist organisation and died while trying to retrieve planted explosives.
Speaking to the media, Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh said:
“The person may have links with a terrorist outfit. Preliminary investigation suggests the blast occurred due to mishandling while removing planted explosive material.”
Panic and Police Action
The loud explosion was heard across the locality, sending residents into panic. Police teams quickly arrived at the spot and cordoned off the area. A forensic team has been deployed to collect samples and analyse the type of explosives used.
According to police officials, the man had likely come to the site to collect or shift explosives but failed to handle them properly, leading to the fatal blast.
Forensic and Security Investigation Underway
A forensic laboratory team is examining the scene, and police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby locations. Security has been heightened in the region, given Amritsar’s proximity to the international border and its past vulnerability to cross-border terror operations.
“All angles, including terror links and logistical support, are being thoroughly investigated,” a senior officer said.
Heightened Alert in Border Region
This incident has reignited concerns about terrorist activity in Punjab, especially amid ongoing security alerts in border states. The Punjab Police have initiated a combing operation in the area and are coordinating with central agencies to trace any possible terror network connections.
