Karnataka Government Vows to Continue Land Acquisition; DCM Asserts Congress Commitment to Equality, Development, and Justice for All

Vijayapura: In a major push for irrigation infrastructure and equitable water distribution, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the Karnataka Government is exerting pressure on the Centre to approve a notification to raise the height of the Almatti dam to 524 metres. This significant announcement was made during his address at a developmental event in Kolhara, Vijayapura district.

"We are putting pressure on the Central Government to issue a notification to increase the height of the Almatti dam to 524 metres. We have also decided to continue the necessary land acquisition process for this," said DCM Shivakumar, highlighting the urgency of the project that could transform the agrarian economy of North Karnataka.

Cultural and Political Vision Interwoven

DCM Shivakumar’s speech wasn’t limited to infrastructure. Speaking in the birthplace of Basavanna, he seamlessly blended political development with spiritual philosophy.

"Basavanna says equality, equal life for all, equal share. The Congress party believes in peace, love, devotion, equality, and giving food to the poor," he said, echoing the spiritual reformer’s vision and aligning it with his party’s welfare initiatives.

Congress's Commitment to the Marginalized

Responding to concerns raised by the Banjara community, Shivakumar assured social justice and warned against falling prey to misinformation.

"You should not fall prey to any misinformation... We will work to provide justice and give equality and strength to everyone," he added.

He further remarked that human life is a fleeting opportunity, and it’s how we utilize it that matters, stressing governance that uplifts the vulnerable.

Developmental Milestones and Vision

Shivakumar highlighted key achievements under the Congress government:

  • ₹5,000 crore per year allocated for Kalyan, Karnataka development

  • ₹2,025 crore for Bidar district

  • Completion of the Upper Krishna Project

  • Free electricity (up to 2,200 units), free bus travel, 10 kg of rice, and unemployment allowance for women

  • Water provision for the second crop season

  • Granting of land title deeds to 1,11,111 families

“We think about the lives of the poor. As per Basavanna’s wish, we are running the government with equal rights and equal share for all,” Shivakumar affirmed.

Criticism of the BJP's Unfulfilled Promises

In a scathing critique of the previous BJP regime, he accused it of failing to deliver the ₹5,300 crore grant promised for the Bhadra Upper River Project, and for neglecting irrigation demands.

“The BJP government did not keep its promise. It did not help in irrigation projects,” he said.

Future Outlook and Political Confidence

Shivakumar praised Shivanand Patil, highlighting his role in Congress's by-election victory in Haveri, and projected a strong return for the party in the 2028 elections.

“The Congress government will come to power again. We are not just building infrastructure—we are restoring dignity and justice to our people,” Shivakumar asserted.
