27-Year-Old Contract Worker Parashuram Dies in Fatal Industrial Accident at Sompura Industrial Area; Safety Protocols Under Scrutiny
Nelamangala: In a heart-wrenching industrial tragedy, a 27-year-old labourer lost his life after falling from a height of 45 feet while attempting to fix a roof sheet at the TD Power Systems factory in Sompura Industrial Area, Nelamangala.
The deceased, identified as Parashuram, hailed from Raichur and was working on a contract basis at the factory. The accident occurred while he was addressing a roof leakage issue caused by the incessant rainfall in the region.
“He had climbed atop the factory to fix the leaking sheet when he lost his balance and fell. The impact was fatal,” said an official from the Dabaspet Police Station, who confirmed that no harness or safety gear was visibly in use during the task.
Eyewitnesses say Parashuram, along with a few other workers, was deployed in urgent repair work to prevent water damage to the factory's interior. However, the safety arrangements at the site appear to have been woefully inadequate, with many alleging a complete absence of standard fall-prevention measures.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among labour rights activists, who claim that contract workers are routinely exposed to life-threatening conditions without proper training or safety infrastructure.
“This is not an accident—it is institutional negligence. Time and again, we lose workers to unsafe working conditions, and still, companies cut corners on safety,” said a representative from the Karnataka Labour Welfare Organisation.
Soon after the incident, Dabaspet Police visited the spot, took stock of the situation, and sent the body to Tumakuru District Hospital for a post-mortem. A formal case has been registered, and further investigations are underway to determine whether labour law violations occurred.
“We have registered an unnatural death case and are looking into whether the contractor or company followed proper safety norms,” the investigating officer said.
QUESTIONS RAISED OVER WORKPLACE SAFETY
Parashuram’s death has once again exposed the glaring gaps in industrial safety compliance, especially when it comes to contractual labourers. The fact that he was deployed on a high-risk task on the very day of his contract work points to the expendable nature of temporary workers in many industrial setups.
Labour unions are now demanding a thorough probe and immediate accountability from TD Power Systems and the contractor involved. They are also calling on the Labour Department to conduct surprise audits across similar facilities in the region.
“Parashuram came to earn his livelihood and ended up paying with his life. His family must receive compensation, and those responsible must face action,” demanded a local union leader.
With the monsoon intensifying and similar repair works expected across various industrial units, experts warn that urgent government intervention is needed to prevent more such tragedies.
