Shocking Assault in Medical College Circles: Pune, Solapur, and Sangli Youths Held; Victim Alleges Threats and Intimidation Post Crime
Sangli: In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra and Karnataka, a 22-year-old third-year MBBS student from Belgaum, Karnataka, was allegedly gang-raped by two of her classmates and one of their friends in Sangli district, Maharashtra, after being drugged with alcohol.
The shocking incident took place on the night of May 18, when the victim was invited by the accused for a movie outing. However, before heading to the cinema, she was taken to a flat where she was allegedly served alcohol, after which she began feeling dizzy and disoriented.
“The accused were intoxicated and gave her alcohol, after which the survivor felt dizzy. The three youths then sexually assaulted her and threatened her with dire consequences if she dared to reveal anything,”
a senior Sangli police officer revealed.
Arrests Across Three Cities, Police Custody Till May 27
Following the survivor’s statement to her parents and the subsequent complaint lodged at Vishrambaugh police station, three accused aged between 20 and 22 were arrested from Pune, Solapur, and Sangli. They have been remanded to police custody till May 27, a court order confirmed.
The accused include two of the survivor’s classmates, adding to the trauma and betrayal experienced by the victim. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for gang rape and criminal intimidation.
“We are meticulously analyzing the complainant’s full statement. Further investigations are in progress to collect corroborative evidence and digital forensic data,”
added the official.

The survivor, a dedicated student from Belgaum pursuing her dreams of becoming a doctor, is now undergoing medical and psychological care. The case has raised serious concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions, especially professional colleges like medicine, which are expected to uphold discipline and integrity.
Social activists and women's rights groups across Karnataka and Maharashtra have condemned the incident and are demanding swift justice and institutional accountability.
