Popular 2000s Icon Dies in Mumbai; Husband Parag Tyagi, Family Perform Last Rites at Oshiwara Crematorium
Mumbai: In a deeply saddening development, actor and model Shefali Jariwala, best known as the ‘Kaanta Laga’ girl, passed away at the age of 42 after suffering a cardiac arrest on Friday night. The beloved performer, who rose to iconic status in the early 2000s, was declared dead at Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital, where she was rushed by her husband Parag Tyagi and close family members.
“Shefali was brought in around midnight. Despite best efforts, she could not be revived,”
a senior doctor at Bellevue Hospital confirmed.
Sequence of Events Leading to Her Demise
According to police and hospital sources, Shefali had reportedly taken an anti-aging injection earlier on Friday afternoon—a treatment she had been undergoing under medical supervision for a few years. Later that evening, she took her regular medication, after which her blood pressure dropped sharply, and she began shivering uncontrollably.
Alarmed, her husband and three others rushed her to the hospital. However, she was declared brought dead.
“Shefali had no major recent health concerns but had been using an anti-ageing therapy. We’re investigating the possible link, if any, to her sudden collapse.”
a police official said, requesting anonymity.
A Career That Started With a Cultural Phenomenon
Shefali Jariwala first stepped into the limelight with the 2002 chartbuster “Kaanta Laga”, which turned her into a youth sensation overnight. While she didn’t build a long-lasting Bollywood career, her stardom endured through music videos, cameo roles in films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Hudugaru, and numerous appearances on reality TV.
She was a fan-favourite contestant on Bigg Boss 13 and also appeared in Nach Baliye, Boogie Woogie, and other popular reality shows.
“When we met her just 20 days ago, she told us how proud she was that Kaanta Laga remained iconic even after two decades. She wanted to create something that would stay memorable for the next 20 years.”
said Vinay Sapru, co-director of Kaanta Laga, in an emotional tribute to Mid Day.
Personal Life and Tributes
Shefali was earlier married to Harmeet Singh of Meet Brothers in 2004, but they divorced in 2009. In 2015, she married television actor Parag Tyagi, known for roles in Pavitra Rishta, Jodha Akbar, and Brahmarakshas.
Parag was seen leaving the hospital visibly distraught, as paparazzi captured heart-wrenching visuals of the moment.
Actor Esha Deol shared her condolences on Instagram:
“May your soul rest in peace. Deepest condolences to the family. Om Shanti,”
wrote Esha, along with a photo of Shefali.
Shefali’s last rites were conducted by her husband Parag, father Satish Jariwala, and younger sister Shivani Jariwala at the Oshiwara Hindu crematorium.
