Officials say DNA confirmation is almost complete; three families are still awaiting final reports

Ahmedabad: Nine days after the devastating Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, officials confirmed on Saturday that DNA identification of victims has reached its final stage. Out of 247 confirmed matches, 232 bodies have already been handed over to their families.

Officials at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital said that as of 6 p.m. on June 21, 147 of the deceased had been identified through DNA analysis. While 232 bodies have been returned to their next of kin, 12 families have requested a delayed handover due to personal or logistical reasons. DNA reports for three victims are still pending.

“The identification process is in its final leg. Our teams are working round the clock to ensure that each family receives their loved one with due respect and dignity,”
Senior official, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital

The tragic incident occurred on June 12 at 1:39 p.m., when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, crashed into the campus of a medical college shortly after takeoff. The crash site, located near the airport's perimeter, witnessed a massive fire and structural damage, making identification of victims particularly challenging.

Emergency response teams, forensic experts, and hospital staff have been working continuously in coordination with the families, utilising DNA samples to complete identification amid difficult circumstances.

Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to ensure the timely completion of the remaining formalities. Authorities have assured that counselling and assistance are being provided to grieving families.
