Accused Hanumanthappa Axes Close Friend Nagaraj on Gangavathi Road; Brother Also Arrested for Aiding Murder
Koppal: In a shocking act of rage and betrayal, a man named Hanumanthappa from Veethalapur village in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district surrendered to the police after brutally murdering his close friend Nagaraj, who he accused of having an illicit affair with his wife.
The gruesome incident occurred on the outskirts of Venkatagiri village on Monday morning. According to police, Hanumanthappa and Nagaraj had shared a long-standing friendship, having grown up together as neighbours. But their bond turned bitter when Hanumanthappa suspected Nagaraj of being romantically involved with his wife.
“Despite repeated warnings, Nagaraj continued the affair. The growing resentment ultimately led Hanumanthappa to take violent revenge,”
said a police official from Kanakagiri Police Station, where the accused later surrendered voluntarily.
Crime of Passion Turns Deadly
Hanumanthappa had been married for seven years. Over time, Nagaraj allegedly developed a close relationship with his wife, which soon turned into a secret affair, known to people in the locality. Hanumanthappa, enraged by the betrayal from both his wife and best friend, had reportedly warned Nagaraj multiple times to stay away.
On learning that Nagaraj was heading toward Gangavathi, Hanumanthappa, accompanied by his brother Siddaramesh, followed him on a bike. The duo intercepted Nagaraj mid-route and Hanumanthappa struck him with an axe, resulting in instant death.
After the murder, Hanumanthappa ran to the middle of the road, screaming, and then surrendered to the Kanakagiri Police Station, leaving the local community stunned.
Police Investigation Underway
The police have registered a murder case and arrested Siddaramesh for allegedly helping his brother commit the crime.
“Hanumanthappa has confessed to the crime. We are verifying his statement and collecting forensic evidence. Siddaramesh has been booked for aiding and abetting murder,”
confirmed the investigation team.
The incident has sparked intense discussions on rural honor, betrayal, and vigilante justice, highlighting the dangers of personal vendettas spiraling into violent crimes.
