Monsoon Reaches Delhi by June 29, Covering Entire Country Ahead of July 8 Schedule for First Time Since 2020
New Delhi: In a remarkable development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon has officially covered the entire country—including Delhi— a full 9 days ahead of its usual schedule. This marks the earliest full coverage of the Indian subcontinent since 2020.
According to the IMD, the monsoon winds, which typically arrive over Kerala around June 1, had advanced two days early this year, arriving on May 24. Since then, the weather system rapidly progressed, backed by strong low-pressure areas over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, helping it advance through Maharashtra, the Northeast, and into northern states.
“This is the first monsoon since 2020 that has covered the entire country by June 26.”
The IMD said in an official statement.
Delhi Receives Monsoon Showers; Rainfall to Continue in Several States
The capital city, Delhi, received its first official spell of monsoon showers as of June 29, alongside parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh.
The Met department forecasts heavy to hefty rainfall across northwest, central, eastern, and northeastern India over the next seven days.
“Heavy rainfall is expected in Jharkhand on June 29 and 30, and in Odisha on June 29.”
The department noted.
Record Early Start and Rapid Progression
The monsoon typically covers the entire country by July 8, but this year, the full progression was completed by June 29, with most of the country witnessing rainfall patterns well ahead of normal timelines.
Notably, this year’s early onset over Kerala on May 24 was the earliest since 2009, when the monsoon had entered the mainland on May 23.
“Strong oceanic systems significantly accelerated the monsoon's advance this year,”
explained senior IMD scientists.
