At Naval Academy Event, Munir Revives Anti-India Rhetoric; India Firm on Kashmir Being an Integral Part, Reiterates Tough Stance Against Terrorism

Islamabad/Karachi: Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has once again stirred controversy with provocative remarks on Jammu and Kashmir, describing the situation in the region as a "legitimate struggle for freedom", not terrorism, during a public address.

Speaking at a passing out ceremony at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, Munir stated:

“What is being labelled as terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is not terrorism. Rather, it is a legitimate struggle for freedom. Pakistan has always stood with Kashmiris and will continue to do so.”

Munir’s Warning of a “Swift Response” to India

The Army Chief further issued a veiled warning to India, claiming that Pakistan would deliver a “precise and swift response” if India attacks in the future.

“Pakistan has responded decisively before, including after the 2019 Balakot airstrike, and more recently in Operation Sindoor,”
he added, referring to past military encounters between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Munir claimed that Pakistan remains committed to peace but would act firmly if provoked. He described Pakistan as a “net regional stabiliser” and said that the country had shown restraint and maturity in its decision-making, despite “repeated provocations.”

India’s Position: Kashmir is an Integral Part

India has long maintained its official position that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of the country, and has rejected all external interference on the matter.

The Indian government has consistently asserted that any attempt to label cross-border terrorism as a freedom movement is baseless and unacceptable.

“India has made it clear to the international community that terrorism will not be tolerated. Action will be taken against all who attempt to disrupt peace in the region.”
Sources within the Indian security establishment have reiterated.

Background: A Long-standing Flashpoint

Tensions over Kashmir have been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan for decades, often leading to military standoffs. The revocation of Article 370 in August 2019 by India further heightened the geopolitical discord, drawing repeated commentary from Pakistani leadership on international platforms.

India has categorically rejected all such statements, insisting that the matter is strictly internal and that any peace must be built on the eradication of terrorism from the region.
