First in Karnataka: Gokarna Police Use Real-Time Audio Warning Through Intelligent Surveillance System to Avert Disaster

Uttara Kannada: In what is being hailed as a landmark moment in digital policing in Karnataka, a viral CCTV video has captured a life-threatening moment involving a couple and their child on the newly constructed Gangavali Bridge connecting Gokarna and Ankola. The duo was seen balancing precariously on the bridge’s grill while trying to take a selfie—with a child in hand—right above a river flowing with a dangerous current.

But what happened next was nothing short of a digital miracle.

Live Voice from Camera Shocks Couple, Saves Child

In a first-of-its-kind intervention, an AI-powered, Wi-Fi-connected intelligent surveillance camera installed on the bridge detected the dangerous act in real time. Using its two-way audio system, the Uttara Kannada police issued a live warning to the couple.

"Please move away immediately. You are in a danger zone. There is a strong river current below," came the unexpected voice from the camera.

Startled and clearly unaware they were being monitored, the couple—shocked by the voice—instantly picked up the child and ran off the grill, narrowly avoiding a potential tragedy.

Praise Pours in for Timely Police Action

The bold move by Gokarna police has drawn widespread praise from the local community and tourists alike.

"This is the first time we have used audio warnings through CCTV to warn tourists about the danger,"
said Gokarna Police Inspector Sridhar, who led the intervention.
"If there had been a slight delay, the child could have fallen into the river. We are relieved that the timely warning probably saved a life."

The incident occurred about 5 km from Gokarna, as the couple was traveling from Manjuguni to Ankola and stopped at the newly inaugurated bridge for a photo opportunity. Their ill-advised selfie moment was captured and immediately flagged by the smart surveillance system.

35 AI Cameras, One Purpose: Saving Lives

Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police M Narayan confirmed that 35 AI-integrated CCTV cameras have been strategically installed across key tourist spots in Gokarna—including Temple Beach, Kudle Beach, Om Beach, and Paradise Beach. These are connected to the Tourist Information Centre and Gokarna Police Station, enabling real-time monitoring and direct communication.

“Inspector Sridhar’s quick action has set a new benchmark in proactive policing,” said SP Narayan, announcing a cash reward of Rs 5,000 for the inspector.

Tourists Advised: Be Safe, Be Smart

Authorities are now urging all tourists visiting Gokarna and surrounding areas to respect safety guidelines and obey digital warnings issued at high-risk spots. As Gokarna grows in popularity as a tourist destination, intelligent surveillance is not just watching, it’s saving lives.
