Devotion turns into devastation as young lives are lost near Gyan Saraswati Temple— Godavari’s sudden surge swallows five teens before prayers; Telangana mourns a heartbreaking Sunday

Telangana: Five teenagers drowned in the Godavari River near Basara on Sunday afternoon, moments before they were to offer prayers at the renowned Gyan Saraswati Temple. The victims, all hailing from Hyderabad, had come with their families and friends to seek divine blessings, but what was meant to be a spiritual visit ended in unimaginable sorrow.

According to Bhainsa Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Avinash Kumar, the youths were taking a holy dip in the river when the water level suddenly surged, pulling them under. "The Godavari's flow intensified unexpectedly, catching the teenagers off guard," he said.

“They were here for worship, but fate had other plans. Within seconds, they disappeared beneath the water,” a witness recounted, struggling to hold back tears.

Rescue teams responded quickly and pulled the five bodies from the river, rushing them to the nearest government hospital. However, doctors confirmed that all five were dead before arrival. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered.

The devastated families remain in shock, their spiritual journey turning into a scene of despair. Officials are now investigating the incident, including whether any warning systems or safety barriers were absent in the area frequented by pilgrims.

The Gyan Saraswati Temple attracts thousands of devotees each week, especially during weekends and auspicious days. The tragedy has once again raised serious questions about safety preparedness around sacred water bodies, especially in pilgrimage hotspots.

“There were no warning signs, no lifeguards. This loss could have been avoided,” lamented a relative of one of the victims.

The state government is expected to announce compensation and initiate an internal review. Meanwhile, the temple town of Basara remains silent, mourning the loss of five young lives who came for blessings but left as memories.
