Crowd surge during trophy celebrations turns deadly; over 20 injured, death toll may rise

Bengaluru: What was meant to be a historic and joyous occasion turned tragic on Tuesday night, as ten fans lost their lives in a stampede near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bangalore’s maiden IPL title win after 18 years.

According to initial reports, the victims include six men, three women, and a seriously ill child. The incident occurred when fans surged forward as gates 18, 19, and 20 were opened to accommodate the swelling crowd. The chaos quickly escalated as some people tried to climb over each other to enter the premises, triggering a deadly stampede.

Of the deceased, six were declared dead at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals, while four more, including a dental student, died at Vaidehi Super Specialty Hospital. More than 20 others are being treated for injuries and trauma. One youth reportedly broke his leg while attempting to climb over the stadium gate near Gate No. 6.

The situation worsened near Gate No. 12, where RCB players were expected to arrive. A female fan who collapsed in the crush was rushed to Bowring Hospital but could not be saved. The grief-stricken families of the deceased gathered at hospitals, demanding accountability.

Police resorted to a lathi charge in an attempt to control the stampede. Traffic came to a standstill in areas surrounding the stadium due to the massive gathering.

Authorities have assured an investigation into the cause of the stampede and promised strict crowd control measures in future public events.
