Massive Crowd Gathers to Celebrate RCB’s Maiden IPL Win After 18 Years; Stampede Breaks Out as Gates Open Near Team Arrival Spot

Bengaluru: A moment of historic celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first-ever IPL title turned tragic late Tuesday night, as four fans lost their lives and over 15 were injured in a stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered to welcome the victorious team.

According to police sources, the chaos unfolded as fans thronged gates 18, 19, and 20 of the stadium. The situation worsened when Gate No. 12, where the RCB players were expected to arrive, saw an overwhelming surge of fans breaking past barricades. The stampede triggered widespread panic, and some fans collapsed in the crowd crush.

"There was pushing, shoving, and people screaming. We couldn't breathe… someone fell, and others tumbled over them," said an eyewitness present near Gate No. 12.

Two of the deceased fans were rushed to Bowring Hospital, while two others succumbed at Vaidehi Super Speciality Hospital. Among the injured is a woman who fainted and a young man who broke his leg after climbing a gate near Gate No. 6.

In a bid to bring the crowd under control, police resorted to a lathi charge. The stampede also led to major traffic snarls on roads around the stadium.

Authorities have assured an investigation into crowd management lapses. The joyous moment of RCB’s historic win after 18 years has been overshadowed by this horrific tragedy.
