Court confirms Mamata Pathak’s conviction based on strong circumstantial evidence in 2021 murder case

Chhatarpur: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has upheld the life imprisonment sentence awarded to former chemistry professor Mamata Pathak, convicted of murdering her husband, Dr. Neeraj Pathak, by electrocution in 2021.

A division bench of Justices Vivek Agarwal and Devnarayan Mishra dismissed Mamata’s appeal and confirmed the lower court's judgment, terming the circumstantial evidence against her conclusive.

Doctor Electrocuted After Being Drugged

The incident occurred on April 29, 2021, at the couple’s residence in Loknathpuram Colony, Chhatarpur. The court noted that Mamata administered sleeping pills to her husband, who was a 65-year-old medical officer at Chhatarpur District Hospital, and later killed him by giving an electric shock after he lost consciousness.

According to the prosecution, Mamata had moved in with her husband just 10 months before his death, and their relationship had been strained over allegations of infidelity.

Victim's Last Call Provided Key Clue

“Before noon on the day of the incident, Dr. Neeraj Pathak had called a relative and said he was being tortured, denied food, and locked in a bathroom. He also mentioned a head injury.”
The High Court noted, referring to the audio recording submitted as key evidence by the prosecution.

The relative alerted the police, and Dr. Pathak was rescued from the bathroom, but succumbed shortly after. The audio clip and witness testimony played a pivotal role in the trial.

Trial Court's Verdict Upheld

The Chhatarpur trial court had earlier convicted Mamata based on strong circumstantial evidence, which included the absence of any outsider, the deteriorating relationship, and the sequence of events leading to the murder.

Despite Mamata Pathak’s appeal, the High Court found no merit in her defense, thereby upholding the life sentence.
