Dramatic early-morning police encounter leaves two injured; accused used Instagram to plan heists

Hubballi: In a dramatic early-morning encounter on Thursday, two suspected robbers were shot in the leg by police while attempting to flee near the Police Training School, under the jurisdiction of Vidyanagar Police Station.

The incident was confirmed by Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, who stated that the confrontation was part of an ongoing crackdown on an inter-state robbery gang.

Doordarshan Employee's Alert Leads to Major Breakthrough

According to police, the sequence of events began late Wednesday night when a Doordarshan employee was ambushed by armed robbers while returning home on his two-wheeler. Though they attempted to snatch his bike, he managed to escape and promptly filed a complaint.

“Acting swiftly on the complaint, police teams from three stations in Dharwad coordinated and arrested one of the main accused, Hussainsaab Kanavalli,”
said Commissioner N. Shashikumar.

Kanavalli is a notorious criminal wanted in over 35 theft cases spanning Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.

Accused Uses Instagram to Dodge Surveillance

Initial investigation revealed that the gang was highly organized and used Instagram’s messaging feature to plan their robberies, intentionally avoiding phone conversations to dodge law enforcement tracking.

“The gang was using social media, particularly Instagram messages, to coordinate their operations, which is a worrying trend,”
a senior police officer said.

Shootout During Escape Attempt

Police reported that while escorting Kanavalli to identify the hideout of his gang members, he attacked the officers and fled.

Shortly after, two more suspects — Vijay Annigeri and Muzammil Saudagar — tried to escape during the follow-up operation. In response, Police Sub-Inspector Mallikarjun opened fire in self-defense, injuring both in the leg.

“Both accused are from Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and are believed to be part of a larger, organised gang.”
confirmed Commissioner Shashikumar.

Injured Officers and Accused Under Medical Supervision

Following the confrontation, PSI Mallikarjun and Constable Ishaq, who were both injured during the operation, were admitted to Dharwad District Hospital. Commissioner Shashikumar personally visited the hospital to inquire about their condition.

He also met the accused Annigeri and Saudagar, who are undergoing treatment under strict police watch.

Kanavalli on the Run Again

Despite being in custody initially, Hussainsaab Kanavalli managed to escape again while being taken to a location for identification of the remaining suspects.

“A search operation is underway to trace Kanavalli, and teams have been deployed across the region.”
a police official said.
