The man with the golden voice falls silent
Ameen Sayani, the legendary Indian radio personality known for his iconic sign-off "Behno aur Bhaiyo" and for hosting the hugely popular Binaca Geetmala countdown show, passed away late Tuesday night at the age of 91.
Sayani's demise marks the end of an era in Indian broadcasting. He leaves behind an unmatched legacy that shaped radio entertainment in India and influenced generations of listeners across the subcontinent.
Sayani started his radio career in 1951 with All India Radio Bombay. He soon became renowned for his distinctive style and flair for showmanship. In 1976, he joined Radio Ceylon and took Binaca Geetmala to phenomenal heights – at its peak the show had a dedicated weekly audience of over 60 million.
Such was his following that Sayani's famous sign-off line "Behno aur Bhaiyo" sparked a cultural shift from the traditional "Bhaiyo aur Behno". His golden, melodious voice was instantly recognizable to listeners. Over his illustrious career spanning over five decades, Sayani produced and hosted over 54,000 radio programs.
Sayani won numerous accolades for his contribution to Indian broadcasting and popular culture. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009. In 2000, he won the prestigious Golden Abby award for producing and hosting the Binaca Geetmala show.
The passing of the broadcasting supremo leaves a void that can perhaps never be filled. An era has truly ended. Sayani’s legacy will live on eternally in the hearts of the millions of faithful listeners whose lives he touched.
