Call for State Government Intervention as AIDSO Karnataka Condemns NMC Penalties on Medical Colleges
Bengaluru: Ajay Kamath,
State Secretary of AIDSO Karnataka, has strongly criticized the National
Medical Commission (NMC) for its actions penalizing several medical colleges
across Karnataka. The NMC issued notices to 13 government and 11 private
medical colleges, imposing penalties ranging from 2 lakh to 15 lakhs for failing
to meet prescribed standards.
Kamath
expressed dismay over what he called the undemocratic imposition of fines,
emphasizing that while maintaining standards is crucial, penalizing
institutions without addressing underlying issues is unjust. He highlighted
deficiencies in faculty numbers and infrastructure, particularly in government
medical colleges, and criticized authorities for neglecting to address these
systemic challenges.
The approach
of NMC indicates a refusal to take responsibility for improving medical
education in the country, Kamath asserted. He accused the state government of
prioritizing revenue from NRI quotas over funding improvements in medical
education infrastructure.
AIDSO
Karnataka has vehemently condemned NMC's approach and demanded immediate
intervention from the state government to allocate sufficient funds for medical
education. Kamath argued that penalizing educational institutions for the
failures of governance undermines the fundamental purpose of education.
