Minimum Passing Marks Set at 35%

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has discontinued the 10% additional grace marks system for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations. The minimum passing score has been restored to 35%, as it was before 2024.

Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced the decision after a video conference with officials from the Education, Home, and Revenue departments, along with Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, and Zilla Panchayat CEOs. The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming SSLC and Second Pre-University Course (PUC) examinations.

Speaking at a press conference, the minister stated that the grace marks system had affected education quality and students' competitive mindset. He cited widespread criticism and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's stance against grace marks as reasons for the policy reversal.

Previously, the additional grace marks were introduced due to a decline in SSLC results following the implementation of webcasting surveillance. However, the practice of awarding up to 10% grace marks in a maximum of three subjects will continue to assist students who narrowly miss passing. This reduces the total grace marks from 20% last year to 10% this year.

Students must now score at least 35 marks in the first language and 28 marks in other subjects in the written examination. Including internal assessment marks, a total of 35% is required to pass. If a student fails in three subjects but meets the minimum total score of 219, 10 grace marks will be awarded to help them qualify.
